PhD in Biology by the Department of Vegetal Biology and Ecology of the University of the Basque Country (1994). He is working in the Marine Research Division of AZTI since 1995. Since 2004 he is the Head of the Marine and Coastal Environmental Management Area (16 researchers). Expert in estuarine ecology, phytoplankton ecology and biodiversity. He has worked for years in the implementation of some European Directives (i.e. Water Framework Directive and Marine Strategy Directive). He has participated in more than 60 national and international projects (EU FP, Interreg, National Science Programme, regional administrations, etc.) during 20 years and he has published over 75 papers, books, chapters and technical documents on the abovementioned topics (around 45 in SCI journals). He has participated in international working groups (ICES, ICES/OSPAR, WFD working groups, etc). He collaborates as a teacher in three Postgraduate Masters (U. Basque Country). He has supervised twoPhD students.
