PhD in Biology from the University of the Basque Country. He has worked at AZTI since 1995, since 2001 as a senior researcher. Between 2004 and 2016 he was coordinator of the Marine Environmental Management Area. Expert in marine ecology, integrated assessment of the marine environment and marine biodiversity. He has published more than 100 scientific-technical articles in scientific journals, book chapters and technical papers (60 in SCI indexed journals; H index: 24; more than 3,000 citations). He is editor of the AZTI Journal of Marine Research. He is co-author of more than 130 communications at international conferences (more than 50 of them as speaker). He has carried out more than 60 dissemination and diffusion activities in different forums. He participates or has participated in teaching activities in several Postgraduate Masters at the University of the Basque Country, the University of Navarra and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. He has co-directed 2 doctoral theses and several Master’s theses. He has been a member of the organising committee of several international scientific conferences. He has participated as an expert in international institutions and working groups related to the management of the marine environment (ICES, Groups for the implementation of the Water Framework Directive and the European Marine Strategy, etc.). He has participated in dozens of projects (in many of them as coordinator), both for private and public entities, including numerous R&D&I projects subsidised in different international (Horizon 2020, Interreg, EU Framework Programmes), national (National R&D&I Plan) and regional (Etortek, Elkartek, Etorgai, etc.) programmes.
