Context

Livestock production is a key activity in ensuring that people have adequate access to the protein they need to meet their dietary requirements. Within animal production, the pig and poultry sectors are of paramount importance and have a high representation within the livestock sector, accounting for about 1% of the total Spanish GDP and employing more than 700,000 workers.

Despite its importance, the sector faces many challenges and constraints. The control of greenhouse gas emissions, nitrates and phosphorus, the need to limit the use of antibiotics and the improvement of animal welfare are challenges that the sector will have to face in order to ensure the sustainability of production in an ethical and responsible manner. This includes improving overall animal health and developing new technologies, methods and practices to make the sector more efficient, competitive and environmentally friendly.

Addressing these challenges requires a paradigm shift that considers all parts of the livestock value chain as a living ecosystem that must be understood, monitored and treated as such.

Objective

The overall objective of BIOTEGANIA is to develop a system that integrates different biotechnological, digital and artificial intelligence tools to:

  • the detection, prevention, control and treatment of emerging transmissible diseases
  • Optimise logistics and production processes to improve animal welfare and the environmental and social sustainability of livestock farming.

All with the aim of providing society with safe and high quality food.

Innovative character

Environmental sensor applications, biotechnological tools, and digital biosecurity strategies are being developed to achieve these goals. All of this using artificial intelligence based on big data and machine learning.

The BIOTEGANIA project presents innovative aspects by applying new technologies with a holistic approach to the entire value chain. For the first time, information will be obtained in an integrated way, both in terms of the technological systems to be used (sensors and advanced diagnostics, digital biosecurity and logistics, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and phage therapy) and in terms of species and breeds (white and Iberian pigs, laying and meat poultry).
