- The alliance between the two technology centres will enhance the digital tool for environmental assessment and advance the automation of data collection and calculation in agricultural and livestock systems.
- The collaboration also aims to promote the dissemination and adoption of the tool throughout the agri-food sector.
Derio, 22 October 2025. The technology centres AZTI and NEIKER have signed a collaboration agreement to further develop ENVIRODIGITAL, a tool created by AZTI and based on the European Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) methodology.
The platform, already in use by several agri-food companies, allows businesses to measure, manage and reduce the environmental footprint of their products and processes across the entire agri-food chain — from primary production (fishing, aquaculture, agriculture and livestock farming) to food distribution and final consumption.
This new partnership will make it possible to add advanced automation features to data collection and processing in the agricultural sector, enabling faster, more accurate environmental assessments based on real field data. In addition, both organisations will work together to increase awareness and uptake of ENVIRODIGITAL among companies and institutions across the industry.
AZTI contributes its extensive experience in environmental footprint calculation and in developing digital solutions for the food industry, while NEIKER brings its solid track record in environmental assessment and emissions calculation for livestock and agricultural systems, as well as in generating scientific knowledge that supports the sustainability of the primary sector.
“We want sustainability to stop being an abstract concept and become a practical tool for the sector,” explains Olatz Unamunzaga, General Director of NEIKER. “To achieve this, it’s essential to combine our strengths — in NEIKER’s case, through expertise and methodology for calculating emissions at the very first link of the chain.”
Meanwhile, Rogelio Pozo, CEO of AZTI, highlights that “our goal is to provide the agri-food sector with robust and easy-to-use digital solutions that help reduce environmental impact and improve business competitiveness.”

Technology serving sustainability
ENVIRODIGITAL combines scientific rigour with a user-friendly interface suitable for companies of all sizes.
Based on an algorithm that integrates 16 categories of environmental impact — such as fossil resource use and human toxicity — the tool generates a global indicator called Enviroscore®, which ranks products on a sustainability scale from A (best performance) to E (highest impact).
With this new collaboration, AZTI and NEIKER strengthen their commitment to sustainability, technological innovation and the competitiveness of the agri-food sector — promoting solutions that help reduce the environmental footprint of food and improve decision-making on the ground.
