At AZTI, we are pioneers in researching the gut microbiota —essentially bacteria— as a tool to advance precision nutrition. We explore how the microorganisms in our bodies impact health and wellbeing. Our goal is to design personalised diets that optimise digestion, promote healthy ageing, improve cancer patients’ quality of life and enhance athletic performance. Guided by science, we tailor nutrition to individual needs.

We develop nutritional recommendations for diverse population groups, grounded in clinical studies. By analysing the composition, diversity and metabolism of the microbiota, we create diets and foods that optimise nutrient absorption, strengthen immunity, support digestive health and contribute to mental wellbeing through the gut-brain connection.

Lipiwell – Personalised Nutrition Service

Lipiwell, AZTI’s new startup, represents the present and future of food. It offers personalised nutrition programmes that help you restore your energy and vitality, tailored to your body’s unique needs.

Our mission is to integrate science and technology to enhance wellbeing, making personalised nutrition accessible to everyone.

We analyse biomarkers that connect metabolism with nutrition in real time, using artificial intelligence to generate personalised predictive models. The LIPIWELL method includes the following markers: body composition, cellular ageing, physical and mental stress, and cell membrane health—integrating this data to design tailored nutritional recommendations.

Additionally, combining AZTI’s scientific backing with the Athletic Club’s performance team, we’ve created Nutrition by Athletic Club—a service that makes these advances accessible to anyone wanting to optimise their fitness, sports performance and wellbeing through personalised nutrition plans.

AZTI Consumer Observatory

The Consumer Observatory is a web application developed by AZTI that provides interactive visualisation of food consumption data in Spanish households. This tool supports analysis of various consumption metrics—such as total spending and per capita consumption—broken down by product or product category.

The system allows flexible data exploration over time (from 1999 to the present), with the possibility of segmenting information at different levels:

  • Geographical: National, by autonomous communities
  • Distribution channels: By consumer access routes
  • Sociodemographic characteristics: Social class, household type, and other relevant variables

The data comes from official statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA). AZTI has carried out extensive work to standardise terminology and integrate these datasets into a unified database, ensuring coherence and comparability over the years.

With its intuitive interface and analytical capabilities, the Consumer Observatory is a strategic tool for companies, public administrations and entities interested in understanding food consumption trends in Spain.
