Understanding an ecosystem’s food web by studying predator–prey relationships is essential for the effective use of ecosystem models. These models can help anticipate how ecosystems may respond to activities such as fishing and improve predictions of the status of fish stocks.

Understanding the degree of connectivity between subpopulations of the same species is also important for effective fisheries management. This information can help determine whether different subpopulations, spawning areas or other population units should be managed separately.

Knowledge of taxonomic and genetic biodiversity is equally important for assessing changes caused by climate change or human activities and for improving predictions of fish stock status.

Using visual taxonomy to identify the species present in the ocean is a time-consuming process, making it difficult to analyse large numbers of samples across different spatial and temporal scales. It is also less effective for organisms that are rare or difficult to detect visually. Environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques, which use metabarcoding to sequence DNA found in the water column, could make it possible to analyse many samples simultaneously and detect the presence of particular species without having to observe them directly.
