DAT-CKMR

Data collection for the application of the Close-Kin Mark-Recapture (CKMR) method to estimate the spawning stock biomass of European hake.

TerritoryRegional
Funder:Basque Government
DurationSince 2025
StatusActive

Context

The CKMR (Close-Kin Mark-Recapture) method makes it possible to estimate the absolute spawning stock biomass of a population without relying on fisheries data. It is based on a robust statistical principle: the more pairs of close relatives (parent–offspring, siblings or half-siblings) found within a given sample, the smaller the population is likely to be, and vice versa.

Its application requires:

In addition to estimating biomass, CKMR provides valuable information on key demographic parameters such as natural mortality and connectivity between populations.

Following a technical assessment, European hake (Merluccius merluccius) has been identified as a suitable species for applying this approach, both because of its biology and previous advances in species-specific genotyping tools. In line with recommendations from the ICES WGBIE working group, a test study has been included in the National Data Collection Plan as part of a coordinated initiative involving several EU Member States (Spain, Portugal, Ireland and France) and the United Kingdom.

Objectives

The main objective of the project is to obtain the genetic data required to apply the CKMR method and accurately estimate the spawning stock biomass of European hake, independently of fisheries data.
