The technical coordinator of the project, Mónica Gutiérrez attended on November 29th the workshop “Technologies and innovative solutions for environmental challenges in the canning industry” organized within the context of LIFE SEACAN project.  The main aim of this project is to demonstrate the potential of two biological wastewater treatment technologies based on biofilm processes (aerobic granular sludge and hybrid bioreactors) to decrease the impact of canning industry’s effluents over the marine ecosystems.

The celebration of this event allowed to gather national and local professionals from canning sector, universities, research centers, waste management companies, public administrations and other institutions directly linked to the management of such effluents.

The current situation and the potential solutions were also discussed through some oral communications with the aim of getting a more sustainable management of the sector. These oral communications were focused on the major environmental challenges of this sector:

  • Wastewater treatment.
  • Valorization of marine by-products.
  • Waste management.
  • Environmental legislation.
  • Potential of circular economy in the canning industry.
  • Decrease the impact of the sector: water footprint.

After the presentations, a roundtable was celebrated beneath “barriers and environmental opportunities in the canning industry” theme. Thanks to the active participation of the attendees, some key conclusions were highlighted.
