AZTI researcher Maite Erauskin-Extramiana has been appointed as a member of the Shark Specialist Group (SSG) of the IUCN Species Survival Commission for the 2026–2029 term. She joins an international network of experts dedicated to the assessment, research and conservation of sharks, rays and chimaeras.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) provides scientific knowledge, tools and advice to support the protection of species and ecosystems. Through its Species Survival Commission (SSC), it coordinates a network of more than 11,000 experts who contribute to assessing the conservation status of species through the IUCN Red List, developing action plans and supporting evidence-based policy.
This appointment adds to AZTI’s strong presence on international scientific committees and networks, including the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), the European Commission’s Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF) and the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).
Participation in these networks enables AZTI to bring its scientific expertise into advisory bodies that help inform decisions on the future of the oceans and their resources.
