Strategies for the protection of threatened marine species

Problem addressed

Threatened marine species face multiple pressures, including bycatch, habitat loss and degradation, climate change and pollution. In many cases, gaps in knowledge about their distribution, conservation status or specific threats make it difficult to implement effective protection measures. Without tailored strategies, appropriate regulation and corrective action, the recovery of these species can be slow or, in some cases, impossible.

What we do and how we do it

• Develop catalogues of threatened species and science-based management plans.
• Prepare technical assessments and monitor populations of species of conservation interest, including their conservation status, presence in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and the threats they face.
• Develop and implement selective devices and best practices for fishing fleets — including ramps, grids and safe-release techniques — to reduce the accidental capture of sharks and rays, marine mammals and seabirds.
• Use advanced technologies, including tagging, tracking, geolocation, detection technologies and environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling, to understand spatial-use patterns, migration routes and critical areas for threatened species.
• Work with public authorities, fishing fleets and conservation organisations to design regulations, define conservation measures and support their effective implementation.
