Content: Tuna handling in these vessels has not chanced since the last twenty years, that’s why we perceived a clear development necessity in the fish handling. Mainly to obtain high safety level and make good fish quality demands for an every year more exigent market. Handling habits used for these vessels were evaluated and them the action lines described. New developments and technologies set solutions that could improve ship working operations, safety and fish quality were proposed.

RIM14: Long-term environmental, anthropogenic and climatic factors explaining spatial and temporal distribution of soft-bottom benthic communities within the Basque estuaries

Author / Editor: Laura Pérez, Ángel Borja, J. Germán Rodríguez, Iñigo Muxika (AZTI-Tecnalia)

Year: 2009

Content: The aim of the present study is to determine, by performing multivariate analysis (Canonical Correspondence Analysis and Redundancy Analysis), the variability in Basque estuarine soft-bottom macrofaunal communities explained by anthropogenic, climatic and sedimentological factors. Thus, this study deals with data on general physico-chemical characteristics of the sediment and with data on pollutants, present within this sediment. Moreover, some oceanic and meteorological variables have been taken into account. Furthermore, temporal trends in all the variables have been analyzed by performing univariate analysis (Spearman Rank Correlations).

Year: 2009

Content: The Fishing Technology Area of AZTI-Tecnalia, in collaboration with some companies, has developed the new pole and line system that improves the mechanization of the fishing operation.

In the present contribution all the actions taken for the design, construction and validation of the new pole prototype for catching Bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus), by the Basque pole and line fleet, are explained

Content: The most serious event of marine pollution in the Cantabrian coast has been the oil spill occurred when the tanker Prestige sunk. This can also be considered as one of the world’s worst oil spills in history, because of both; the amount of heavy fuel spilled and the extent of the affected area (from the Norwest of Spain to the English Chanel). During the first phase of the Prestige crisis (from November the 13th to the end of December 2002, when the pollution reached the Basque coast) a major part of the Cantabrian coast was affected, despite the large distance to the spillage point (to the West of the Galician coast).

Content: This piece of work presents the results of the analysis of the atmospheric temperature measured at the Monte Igeldo Observatory of Donostia-San Sebastian (43º 18′ 27″ N, 02º 02′ 22″ W; altitude 252 m), belonging to the Spanish National Meteorological Agency. Data on the daily maximum and minimum temperatures between 2 January 1928 and 31 December 2007 have been taken into consideration, covering 80 years of information (over 29,000 pieces of data).

RIM06: Pilot study of feasibility of concurrent fish length sampling in Basque Country

Author / Editor: Lucía Zarauz, Iñaki Artetxe, Jon Ruiz (AZTI-Tecnalia)

Year: 2008

Content: A pilot study of feasibility of concurrent market sampling was performed from November 2007 to January 2008, in the port of Ondarroa. The aim was to identify potential problems that will need to be faced with the implementation of concurrent sampling for length, in the frame of the European new data Collection Regulation.

RIM01: Seguimiento técnico de la campaña experimental del buque pesquero

Author / Editor: Esteban Puente, Luis Arregi, Xavier Guinda, Araitz Bilbao (AZTI-Tecnalia)

Year: 2008

Content: This study presents the results of an experimental, exploratory fishing voyage in waters off the West of Scotland with the trawling vessel “KIRRIXKI” (“baka” type), between May and October 2002. Its overall aim was to evaluate the suitability of deep-water species in three fishing grounds (Rockall, St. Kilda and Northwest Ireland) for commercial exploitation.

Year: 2009

Content: The mechanical features of nylon monofilament are an important element in the performance of fishing gear. In this study, laboratory trials have been carried out to determine the mechanical features not only of the monofilaments most widely used by the fleet, but also of other alternative monofilaments available on the market.

Author / Editor: Oihana Solaun, María Jesús Belzunce, Javier Franco, Victoriano Valencia and Ángel Borja (AZTI-Tecnalia)

Year: 2009

Content: This study presents the sediment cartography and metal (As, Cd, Cu, Cr, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn)and organic compound (polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), DDT, hexachlorobencene (HCB), hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), aldrin, dieldrin, trans-nonachlor) content within 12 estuaries of the Basque Country (northern Spain), sampled between 1998 and 2001. The pollution assessment was carried out taking into account background levels, pollution factors and pollution load indices, but also toxicity values (as effect-range low and medium). This investigation relates potential pollutant sources (both industrial and urban), within each estuary, with their concentrations in the sediment.
