Accurate identification of sharks is essential for the conservation of these species and the sustainability of marine ecosystems. AZTI has developed a shark identification guide to improve catch data and statistics on shark interactions with fisheries, particularly on tuna vessels in the Eastern Atlantic.
Correct identification of sharks is essential to assess and mitigate the impact of bycatch, protect vulnerable species and ensure the sustainability of fisheries.
Features of the guide
This guide, written by AZTI researcher Álex Salgado, is aimed at people involved in marine research and fisheries (such as samplers, skippers and crews on board freezer tuna vessels). It covers aspects related to the morphology of sharks, their main characteristics and keys to their identification. It is an easy way to identify a species within a family of sharks (Elasmobranchiomorphi: Carcharhinidae) that have many physical similarities.
