Success story

Tropicalisation and deborealisation of European marine communities

The challenge

Ocean warming is causing a redistribution of marine biodiversity in European seas. It was necessary to understand how marine communities are changing and what this means for food webs and fishery resources.

The solution

AZTI led an international study based on time series spanning up to four decades, drawn from 65 monitoring programmes, with data on 1,817 species. It analysed communities of zooplankton, benthos, pelagic and demersal invertebrates, and fish in the north-east Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Baltic.

Time series analysis and projection of marine climate scenarios

We integrate time series analysis of marine and coastal variables with regional climate change models to identify trends, project future scenarios and anticipate their impacts on ecosystems, strategic sectors and infrastructure. We provide a robust scientific basis for adaptive climate planning at multiple scales.

Fish stocks in a changing climate

We carry out a current diagnosis of the status of fish stocks in the context of climate change through studies that integrate oceanographic, biological, and socioeconomic data. This service represents the first step towards evidence-based adaptive fisheries management.
