Best practices and technology for more sustainable tuna fisheries

The challenge

The Spanish tropical tuna freezer fleet is an international benchmark for sustainability. However, its activity takes place in complex ecosystems where catch selectivity and the reduction of ecological impacts remain ongoing challenges.

The objective was to minimise the unintended effects of purse seine fishing—such as bycatch of vulnerable species and the impact of fish aggregating devices (FADs)—while ensuring the economic and environmental viability of the fleet, in line with international sustainability standards.

The solution

For more than a decade, AZTI has worked closely with the tropical tuna freezer fleet, represented by OPAGAC and ANABAC, to develop and implement the Code of Good Practices adopted by the sector in 2012.

The programme, scientifically verified by AZTI, promotes concrete measures that have become a global model of responsible fishing, including:

In parallel, AZTI leads innovation projects on selective fishing devices that can also be applied to other fisheries (such as trawling or longlining), improving gear selectivity and reducing unwanted catches.
