Sea-level rise and the increasing intensity of storms are putting beaches, estuaries, ports, and coastal infrastructure at risk. Predictive tools were needed to assess vulnerability and to design effective adaptation measures.
AZTI developed a set of tools and models, including:
Hydro-sedimentary, morphological, and flood models.
A historical storm database and video-monitoring systems (KOSTASystem).
Wave impact energy sensors.
Early warning protocols.
Projections of a 50–65 cm sea-level rise by 2100, with significant beach loss.
Prediction of up to a 59% increase in flood-prone areas.
Integration of results into coastal adaptation strategies.
