Valorisation of by-products generated in aquaculture processes

Problem addressed

Aquaculture generates residual biomass (fish remains, shells, nutrients, etc.) that is often underutilised and ends up becoming an environmental and management challenge. Without valorisation strategies, valuable resources are wasted and additional disposal costs are incurred.

What we do and how we do it

At AZTI, we research and apply valorisation technologies that make it possible to:

• We transform biological residues into ingredients for feed, bioenergy, or biotechnological products.
• We make use of mineral by-products (such as shells or calcareous remains) for applications in materials or fertilisers.
• We design circular processes that reintegrate waste into the production cycle, reducing dependence on external raw materials.
• We develop pilot projects with the sector, ensuring the technical, economic, and environmental viability of the solutions.
