Problem Addressed

Limited knowledge of population dynamics and ecosystem health hinders effective management decision-making. This represents a significant risk when facing challenges such as climate change, increasing pressure on natural resources and habitat degradation.

What we do and how we do it

• We carry out scientific surveys on board research vessels and commercial ships, using methodologies such as fisheries acoustics, research trawl surveys, environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis, population genetic studies and oceanographic sensors.
• These activities enable stock characterisation, estimation of temporal and spatial variability, and assessment of the influence of environmental drivers. The resulting data are integrated into stock assessment models and international monitoring programmes (e.g. ICES, ICCAT).
