Problem addressed

Invasive alien species are one of the main threats to biodiversity and the proper functioning of marine ecosystems. They can displace native species, alter habitats, and generate significant costs for sectors such as aquaculture, fisheries, and maritime transport. The lack of control plans and early detection systems makes it difficult to implement effective management and prevention measures.

What we do and how we do it

• Field surveys in coastal waters, ports, and vulnerable ecosystems to identify newly introduced, established, or spreading invasive species.
• Environmental DNA (eDNA) analyses that allow species to be detected even at very low abundances.
• Mapping and distribution monitoring to locate hotspots and pathways of spread.
• Assessment of the ecological and socio-economic risks associated with each invasive species.
• Technical advisory services for public authorities and key sectors (fisheries, ports, aquaculture) to design prevention, control, and, where feasible, eradication plans.
