AZTI designs and implements early detection, monitoring, and management programmes for invasive alien species in marine and coastal environments. Through specialised surveys—including environmental DNA (eDNA), mapping, and risk assessment—we support public authorities and key sectors in protecting biodiversity and mitigating ecological and economic impacts.
Invasive alien species are one of the main threats to biodiversity and the proper functioning of marine ecosystems. They can displace native species, alter habitats, and generate significant costs for sectors such as aquaculture, fisheries, and maritime transport. The lack of control plans and early detection systems makes it difficult to implement effective management and prevention measures.
