Operational Oceanography

We develop ocean/coastal observation and modelling systems to provide high-resolution data and forecasts for risk anticipation, improved maritime safety and support for sustainable coastal resource management. Thanks to our unique infrastructure in the Basque Country and our participation in European networks, we offer data, data products and operational solutions to challenges such as climate change adaptation, emergency management, energy transition and the digitisation of the maritime sector.

Research sublines

European Coastal and Ocean Databases

We contribute to Copernicus, EMODnet and EuroGOOS by sharing data and knowledge, setting European standards and helping to create interoperable data products and services for environmental and sectoral management in Europe.  We work on conducting case studies and demonstrations at local level, combining European and local data and models.

Coastal–Ocean Modelling

We develop high-resolution models to represent the physical processes in the south-eastern Bay of Biscay and several of its coastal areas. We offer operational forecasts for Maritime Rescue, ocean transport studies, coastal flooding and climate change scenarios.

Real-Time Observation and Monitoring

We operate the Basque Country’s ocean/meteorological network, including advanced videometry systems, deep-sea buoys, coastal stations, tide gauges, HF radars and autonomous vehicles. Real-time data feed web platforms like EuskOOS (locally) and Copernicus (globally) of key importance in emergencies, port safety and coastal management.

Anna Rubio

Coordinator, Coastal Engineering and Operational Oceanography

We transform observations, models and advanced technologies into practical information for managing marine and coastal environments. By integrating sensors, videometry, satellites, autonomous vehicles, and modelling, we deliver reliable real-time data and forecasts that enhance safety, planning, and climate adaptation. Our goal is to provide public authorities, businesses and maritime sectors with robust tools to help them make informed decisions in an increasingly dynamic ocean environment.
