Cross-cutting lines

Environmental resilience and global change

We anticipate the impacts of climate change and other environmental pressures to protect marine and coastal environments.

We combine science, data and tools to strengthen the resilience of ecosystems, infrastructure and economic sectors dependent on the sea.

Research sublines

Environmental pressures and ecosystem health

We assess chemical, microbiological and emerging contaminants in marine, coastal and inland waters, analysing their sources, behaviour and effects on ecosystems and human health. This evidence supports more effective management and risk reduction.

Climate, risks and coastal adaptation

We evaluate the effects of climate change and extreme events on the ocean, coastlines and associated activities. We develop models and scenarios to anticipate impacts, plan adaptation measures and protect infrastructure and vulnerable communities.

Ecological restoration, eco-design and decision support

We promote the restoration of degraded ecosystems and the environmental improvement of products and processes through ecological restoration, eco-design and circular economy approaches, supported by modelling tools, indicators and early-warning systems for informed decision-making.
