Listeria monocytogenes-specific bacteriophages

Patent number: WO/2024/133422 (PCT) | EP4388 888A1 (Europe)

A natural, biotechnology-based solution using bacteriophages (phages) with targeted activity against Listeria monocytogenes, designed to reduce the presence of this pathogen in foods and processing environments and thereby enhance food safety.

Patent number: WO/2024/133422 (PCT) | EP4388 888A1 (Europe)

What is it?

A formulation comprising between one and six highly specific phages targeting Listeria monocytogenes, one of the most persistent pathogens in the food industry and the causative agent of listeriosis, a high-risk infection for public health.

The problem it solves

Listeria can survive and adapt in processing environments even under strict hygiene protocols, posing a major challenge for the food industry and public health. This natural solution complements conventional technologies and ensures effective control of Listeria, including antibiotic-resistant and biofilm-forming strains, without affecting beneficial microbiota or the product’s organoleptic (sensory) properties.

How does it work?

Designed for potential application at different points along the food chain: processing surfaces, industrial environments and foods, via spraying, dipping/immersion or the use of active packaging. Phages act specifically against Listeria: they recognise the bacterium, inject their genetic material and replicate inside it. Once the cycle is complete, newly formed phages lyse the bacterium, which dies, and are released into the environment—repeating this natural cycle again and again as long as Listeria is present.
