A bluefin tuna tagged by AZTI off the Basque coast has been recaptured in Malta more than seven years after being released
- The electronic tag has recorded data for more than four years, during which time the animal has been to the North American coast as well as the Mediterranean.
- The specimen was tagged in the Basque Country in August 2007, during a European tagging program.
- Measuring 65 cm in length and weighing approximately 5 kg at the time of its release, seven and a half years later, it measures two metres and weights 160 kg.
- The precise definition of the population structure and migrations is important to minimise uncertainty in the assessmet and subsequent fisheries management.
