- AZTI is participating in this initiative by gathering samples off the Basque Coast.
- Over 150 research centres across the world will be gathering genetic information on marine micro-organisms
- All the information obtained will be put together in a large ‘genomic library’, which the public will be able to access
(Bilbao. 20 June, 2014). Over 150 marine research centres worldwide are set to participate in Ocean Sampling Day (OSD) so that the microbial diversity existing on the surface of the water can be studied. Researchers will be gathering samples simultaneously of the coasts of the five continents during the summer solstice. In the case of the Basque coast, AZTI will be responsible for carrying out the sampling; the data gathered by the experts will form part of a large ‘genomic library’ of species, which is in itself one of the main aims of this international project.
