PhD in Biology by the University of Navarra (2005) and Maîtrise de Sciences de l´Environnement, Section Océanologie by the University of Bordeaux (France) (1996). He has more than 14 years of experience. He is specialist in the management of coastal shellfish resources (mollusks, echinoderms and crustaceans). He is the head of a shellfish management project that since 1999 AZTI develops for the Fishery Agency of the Basque Government. Also he is specialist in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and in the writing of Environmental Impact Studies (EIS). He has worked in many environmental impact studies related with aquaculture, marine renewable energies, dredging, ports, etc., and in the development of protocols for Environmental Impact Assessment. Principal researcher in more than 40 projects. PhD in Chemistry by the University of Mining and Metallurgy, Kraków (Poland). She works in AZTI in the Marine Research Division since 1998. Her present areas of research are:
- Chemical contamination of coastal, estuarine and port waters.
- Characterization and management of dredged material.
- Sediment Quality Assessment: bioassays, passive samplers.
- Environmental impact: marine monitoring programmes.
She has participated in monitoring programmes and in interdisciplinary collaborative projects at national and international level. She has leaded numerous national and regional projects and she has gained experience in research cruises. Since 2001 participates in the ICES group of experts for marine sediment contamination. In various occasions she has been granted by scholarships to work abroad, in Poland, Scotland and Australia. MJ Belzunce is author/co-author of 55 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 7 book chapters and more than 60 technical-scientific/research consultancy reports.

Is Editor of Frontiers of Marine Ecosystem Ecology, Journal of Sea Research, Continental Shelf Research and Revista de Investigación Marina, and member of the Editorial Board of Marine Pollution Bulletin, Ecological Indicators and Ocean & Coastal Management. Referee in more than 65 international journals and project evaluation agencies. Member of different scientific associations (ASLO, CERF, ECSA). He has participated in more than 100 national, European and international projects during 34 years. He has supervised many PhD and MSc students.

    Maria C. Uyarra is an interdisciplinary researcher with more than ten years of experience in the field of management of marine resources. Her MSc, PhD and postdoctoral research focused on the interactions between coastal tourism and coral reefs, including aspects on climate change, coastal development, biodiversity, economic valuation and social research. She has experience working in a broad array of organizations (i.e. research centres, consultancy, NGOs, University, government) and environments (marine and terrestrial), having worked in both developed and developing countries. Since 2011, when she joined AZTI, Maria C. Uyarra participates in the preparation and development of EU projects, especially related to marine ecosystem services and the implementation of EU policies. Maria C. Uyarra combines her research activity with teaching postgraduate courses on marine conservation.

    PhD in Biology by the Department of Vegetal Biology and Ecology of the University of the Basque Country (1994). He is working in the Marine Research Division of AZTI since 1995. Since 2004 he is the Head of the Marine and Coastal Environmental Management Area (16 researchers). Expert in estuarine ecology, phytoplankton ecology and biodiversity. He has worked for years in the implementation of some European Directives (i.e. Water Framework Directive and Marine Strategy Directive). He has participated in more than 60 national and international projects (EU FP, Interreg, National Science Programme, regional administrations, etc.) during 20 years and he has published over 75 papers, books, chapters and technical documents on the abovementioned topics (around 45 in SCI journals). He has participated in international working groups (ICES, ICES/OSPAR, WFD working groups, etc). He collaborates as a teacher in three Postgraduate Masters (U. Basque Country). He has supervised twoPhD students.

    Over 10 years of professional experience in different lines of marine research applied to Integrated Coastal Zone Management.

    Current research interests are focused on Marine Spatial Planning, Ecosystem Services, and Marine Strategy Framework Directive implementation, Integrated Assessment modelling, seabed characterization, mapping and modelling of benthic ecoystems.

    Principal investigator in more than 30 projects. Leader at AZTI of two European projects and coordinator of Basque country case studies within the MeshAtlantic project (Mapping European Seabed Habitat in the Atlantic area for a better marine management; INTERREG IVB) and MESMA (Monitoring and Evaluation of Spatially Managed Areas; 7th Framework Programme).

    Authored more than 40 publications, including 33 in international peer-reviewed journals and 6 books or book chapters.
    Member of the Editorial Board of Frontiers in Marine Ecosystem Ecology Journal.
    Over 34 oral presentations in international congresses.

Between 2010 and 2015, I worked in research projects on bioremediation, conservation and climate change in different countries (Australia, Italy and UK). My research in AZTI focuses on the recovery of ecosystem services through restauration. I am taking a multi-disciplinary approach, applying ecology, sociology and economics to my research.

During 2007-2008 she combined research activities on biological effects of contaminants in the marine environment with teaching Cell Biology and the postgraduate course on Cell Biology in Environmental Toxicology at the University of the Basque Country. Since 2008, she works as a researcher in the Marine Research Division of AZTI in activities related to ecological and environmental status assessment for the implementation of the Water Framework Directive and Marine Strategy Framework Directive. Expertise in ecotoxicology (bioassays, biomarkers and bioaccumulation) and strategies to combat and assess biofouling formation in the marine environment. She has been involved in more than 20 national and international projects. She is author of 10 publications, 1 book chapter and more than 30 international conferences.
