PhD in biology. Master in Quality Management. 1989 to 1992 Quality control manager in Productos Recondo, Industrial bakery in Spain. 1992 to 1995 Research Assistant in the Scientific Technological Intitute of Navarra, Spain. 1996 -1999 Director of the Institute of Food Quality, Instituto de Calidad Alimentaria (ICA) in Santiago de Chile, and consultant for Chilean food companies in Quality Assurance Systems (HACCP and ISO9000). Since 1999 project manager in AZTI, in the Food Research Division were he has participated in several national and regional funded projects with food companies and in 6 European R&D projects in the development of new food products, functional foods and the valorization of food industry by-products.

Degree in Biological Sciences by the Basque Country University, since 1989 and Master Degree in 1990. Specialization course on “Environmental Expert in the Industry” by the Spanish Distance University (UNED) in 1999. Work experience in Organic Wastes and Waters biological treatments and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of products, for more than 23 years in several Research and Development Centres in the Basque Country (BIOTEC, GAIKER, LEIA). Since 2008, she works in the Sustainability Area (Food Research Unit) of AZTI, with special focus on Biogas and Biohydrogen Production from Food Industry by-products and Microalgae growth from wastewaters.

Chemistry Engineer with a Master´s degree in Environmental contamination and toxicology.
My work is focused on performing Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of food products and processes in order to ecodesign new food products, minimizing environmental impact of food value chain.

Chemist with 4 years of experience as head of production and quality in the food industry. I have nine years of experience as a researcher participating in national and international projects related to Quality and Food Safety, some of them were developed in Ecuador, Mexico and Chile. Since 2005 I have participated in the development and implementation of R & D projects related to the sustainability of the food chain, cleaner production specifically.

I did a three-year degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics and a Bachelor’s degree in Food Science and Technology by the University of the Basque Country. To increase my knowledge about food security and quality techniques I also did a Master’s degree in Food Safety and Quality. My areas of expertise are microbiology, food quality and valorisation of food derived by-products by solid and liquid fermentation.

Since 2002, I have been working in R&D projects, initially in my doctoral thesis in the area of catalysis and petrochemistry and later in IDOKI SCF Technologies S.L. in the area of supercritical fluid technology. As head of process I had to make the planning and task management, time and resources as well as coordination with other teams both in the company’s own projects and in collaborative projects between companies and technological centers and universities both nationally and internationally.
I am currently working in AZTin the Food Sustainability Area dealing with food waste prevention, recycling and valorisation, clean production, Life-cycle assessment, eco-design or biomolecules recovery.

Background: Degree in Food Technology and Technician in Occupational Risk Prevention. (Spain).
Experience: She has over 10-year experience in the field of R + D. She began her career in the Institute of Food Quality Vasco Argentino in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and later, in 2004 joined the AZTI, specializing in issues related to quality, hygiene and food safety systems. She has participated in the development of national and international projects in Latin America (Ecuador, Brazil, Mexico, etc.).
Currently, she is in charge of the technical secretariat of the Spanish Self control Association of Juices and Nectars (AEAZN), combining it with food safety projects and others about prevention of occupational risks in food industry, especially related to ergonomic issues (risk assessment, identification of preventive measures, improvement plans and design of new processes, equipment and workplaces). She also develops the technician tasks of prevention in center AZTI in Derio.

Idoia Olabarrieta is Industrial Engineer and PhD in Polymer Technology. She has experience in the improvement of physical/functionality of biodegradable packaging materials and in different food preservation techniques. Her work as a researcher at AZTI has focused on the use of innovative technologies to improve the preservation of packaged foodstuff. Her current work is mainly directed towards the online monitoring of food quality parameters by sensors. She has experience in leading technological/research projects with food industry and in collaboration with different research partners. Project leader in several national and European collaboration projects and work package leader in PicknPack FP7 European project.

With a MsC in Environmental Agrobiology and a degree in Biology from the University of the Basque Country, Saioa Ramos is working as a researcher in the Sustainability Department of the Food Research Division at AZTI. Her work is focused on performing Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of food products and processes in order to ecodesign new food products. She has been working on the SENSE european Project, which harmonizes a common methodology and develops an easy software – SENSE tool – to measure the environmental and social impact of food SMEs. Moreover she has been participating in diferente LIFE+ initiatives such as CleanFeed or ECOLAC, all of them focused to minimize environmental impact of food value chain. Part of her research is dedicated to complete her doctoral thesis on the evaluation of the environmental impact of food production in collaboration with the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC).

Marta Renteria, researcher at the Efficient and Sustainable Processes area of AZTI. Degree in Biological Sciences, Master in Dairy Technology and Technician in Occupational Risk Prevention. He has worked on projects for industrial fermentation and extraction of valuable components in Gaiker and Biotechnology Research Institute (Montreal, Canada). He has been auditor and trainer of quality systems and hygiene in the food industry, R & D researcher in the development of new dairy products and quality manager in dairy company. Currently involved in research projects in the fields of food products valorisation (pretreatment, recovery treatments, processes, facilities and infrastructure, hygienic design) and occupational risk prevention in the food industries (risk assessment, preventive measures, plans improvement, design of new processes, equipment and workplaces).

Experience in: Aquariology (Aquarium Donostia; 2000); Aquaculture (Cultivos Marinos del Norte turbot farm; 2004); Fish Processing and Quality (Fandicosta and Elaborados Gallegos S.A.; 2005-2006); Fish Quality Certification (Bureau Veritas Spain; 2007-2009) or as a Fisheries Observer (AZTI; 2008).

He has been working in AZTI since 2009, involved in European, national and regional projects focused on the food industry sustainability, specifically on the management, valorisation and recovery of food waste, and on the sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture. Technical leader of two European projects: Life CLEAN FEED and Life GISWASTE.

Jaime Zufía: MSc in Environmental Engineering and Water Management. BSc in Biology. He has 17 years’ experience in conducting environmental projects related to eco-design of food products, Life Cycle Assessment, sustainability of food chain, sustainable production and food by-products and wastewater valorization and treatment, several of them in Latin America (Ecuador and Argentina). Currently he is the head of the Efficiency and Sustainability Department of AZTI and the responsible of Environmental Management System in AZTI. He is a directorate member of the Spanish integrated Organic waste Management, member of the Spanish Network on Life Cycle Assessment; and the Technological Platform for Fishing and Aquaculture.
