Grupo Consorcio reduces its water consumption in fish canning thanks to a Eco-Efficient Production Plan created by AZTI
- The programme focused on canning albacore and tuna at the Santoña cannery.
- This eco-efficient production plan allows for the reduction of production costs.
- Measures are framed within an ambitious Social Responsibility Plan implemented by the cannery.
(Bilbao, on 20 July 2016) Grupo Consorcio, an entrepreneurial group that preserves fish and pre-cooked traditional meals, has trusted AZTI researchers with the design and implementation of an Eco-Efficient Production Plan focusing on reducing water consumption used in albacore and tuna canning. The result is a 40% reduction of water consumption, which leads to a decrease in their environmental impact, as well as significant cost savings for the company.
The Eco-Efficient Production Plan is framed within the group’s Global Environmental Sustainability Plan and thanks to its implementation they have achieved an improvement in the efficiency of production processes as well as a significant reduction of the water footprint related to their marketed products. The programme is also proof of Grupo Consorcio‘s commitment to the sustainable elaboration of their products. In fact, these measures are part of the ambitious Corporate Social Responsibility Plan that Consorcio Group is implementing this year. “We are committed to being a responsible company. We are aware that companies can decide on the future of people, a country’s economy or even global economy, while impacting the environment. Therefore we believe we should lead progress from ethical, responsible and sustainable parameters”, said the Corporate Social Responsibility manager, María Aparicio.
The improvement measures created by AZTI have been implemented in the Grupo Consorcio canning facilities in Santoña (Cantabria). The specialists from the Technology Centre, and the internal team from Grupo Consorcio have created actions to save water and increase productive efficiency. A series of water saving measures have been implemented. Some of them being; optimisation of fish thawing processes, reduction of the amount of water used in cooking without affecting the final quality of the product, adapting water volume in several processes (cleaning, washing, cutting, etc.) and the safe reuse of steam condensates. They have also included organisational measures that have optimised the Consorcio resources, making a cleaner and more competitive process.
The benefits of eco-efficient production
Eco-efficient production and saving plans developed by AZTI have improved the environmental action of companies, reducing costs and increasing productivity and competitiveness. The optimisation plans integrate actions such as the reduction of raw materials, packaging, water and power. These initiatives allow to reduce waste, water discharges and emissions at source, minimising treatment and management costs.
“The proposed measures – says Jaime Zufia, AZTI Sustainable and Efficient Processes Area Coordinator – have been designed to have a low cost and investments, if necessary, should have a prompt financial return. These eco-efficient production plans facilitate implementing environmental management systems, helping to improve corporate image and setting out ongoing improvement methods.”
