To turn it into mechanical energy or electricity

A vessel loses more energy in the form of residual heat than that used for the generation of useful energy. In other words, it loses more heat than the useful energy produced. This heat is mainly lost through exhaust fumes and cooling water.

We analyse the vessel operating conditions and the possibility of implementing a residual heat harnessing project for the different sources (waste heat) using an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC).

ORC equipment is used to:

  • Recover part of the waste heat, turning it into mechanical energy (propulsion assistance).
  • Generate electricity without any additional consumption, achieving savings equivalent to the fuel required to generate the same power.

Applicable sectors

The use of this type of equipment is economically interesting for all vessels with continued power use, operating for a number of hours with average to superior sized diesel or gas engines (around 500 kW or over) so that the return on the initial investment is amortised in a short period depending on the energy intensity used.

Implementation

  • Initial diagnosis of the operating conditions of the vessel and its engines and analysis of the machinery layout on board to identify in detail how residual heat can be harnessed.
  • For installations on active vessels, analysis of the layout of on-board machinery and the possibility of integration with existing equipment.
  • Performance of a detailed economic feasibility study of the equipment installation for evaluation by the client.
  • Implementation times may vary depending on the vessel operating characteristics, whereby these times are similar to those required for the installation of an on-board auxiliary engine.
