Joined AZTI in 1998 after his Master thesis in the University of the Basque Country. Has been working in several research projects and services related with satellite technology and tuna fisheries since. Started working on a satellite oceanography service to support local artisan tuna boats, and jumped to a worldwide service called Catsat for high seas fishing vessels in 2003. Currently, he is in charge of giving oceanographic support and fishing recommendations to more than 300 vessels in the 3 oceans, from tropical tuna purse seiners and longliners to North Atlantic pelagic trawlers. He frequently travels to the main ports to offer training in the use of oceanographic variables for pelagic fishing purposes to companies worldwide. He is also involved in by-catch mitigation research projects as chief scientist during cruises onboard tropical tuna purse seiners.

I studied mathematics in the University of the Basque Country, I did my PhD on marine biology in the University of Bergen and currently I work as senior researcher in Azti.

During my PhD I learnt different processes of fish behaviour modelling such us foraging, diel vertical migration and bioenergetics with the use of tools such as Individual based models.

After I was researcher in the University of Bergen, and I worked with the General Ocean Turbulence Model GOTM to study the effect of different light attenuations and turbulence on phytoplankton, and collaborated in the development of a trait based ecosystem model.

Since I work in Azti my work is more focus on bioeconomic assesment model, applying FLBEIA to different case studies, on data analyisis of recreational fisheries and on participating in the design of sampling fisheries of the Basque Country.
