Cooperative research for the achievement of sustainable fishing

At AZTI-Tecnalia we strive to attain sustainable fishing activities carried out by an economically-competitive fleet, that exercises responsible fishing activities. The research is carried out in collaboration with the sector and the main European Research Centres within the framework of International Organisations such as ICCAT, IOTC, ICES/CIEM, NAFO, STEFC,.... Participation in the preparation of the Scientific Management Council related to the different levels of exploitation of the fishing resources, for the establishment (on behalf of the political authorities)  of the best management decisions; this ensures sustainability of the activity.

  • Evaluation of fisheries and seafood resources: We develop models for the simulation of different management and catch scenarios, using space-time evaluation tools, multispecies and fleets.
  • New stock evaluation methods are applied, by means of direct campaigns (ictioplanctonic methods, acoustics, optical and CUFES)
  • Fishery biology: Study of the biological parameters (genetics, growth, reproduction, diseases and parasitism) and of behaviour (distribution and migration) of the various commercial species.
  • Marine ecosystems: Research into the effects of natural variability and climatic change in the marine ecosystem and fisheries. Likewise, into aspects such as biological productivity, plankton dynamics, recruiting of resources, linking of physical and biological models, etc.
  • Socioeconomics of fishing: New models of fishing research, including the socio-economic variable aimed at a new management in fisheries or for a new fisheries management.

  • Fishery monitoring: Monitoring of the structure and activity of the fishing fleets and commercial catches of the Basque Country, by means of the sampling and fishing information network: landings , discards and biological characteristics of the catches.
  • Stock evaluation campaigns: For the Basque public administration: direct evaluation research cruises of the biomass of stocks, by means of different methods (ictioplanctonics, acoustics, optical etc.). For the fishing sector, experimental fisheries research cruises.
  • Socio-economic surveys: Sectorial statistics and monitoring of economic variables. Fleet profitability analysis. Work studies of the socioeconomic dependence of fishing in different fields. Analysis of the impact of the EU fisheries policy.
