Applied research aimed at sustainable coastal development

At AZTI-Tecnalia we contribute to the knowledge and study of marine environments necessary to reach sustainable developments in our environment. This means the development of new approaches, methods, and tools from an integral perspective, that help decision making by both managers and coastal users. We have the knowledge of physical, ecological, and socioeconomic characteristics of the marine environment and their interactions:

  • Management of the marine environment: Research into the evolution of the environmental quality in coastal areas. Development of new environmental indicators (AMBI ©).
  • Environmental impact: Development of models and methods of evaluation, for the effects of pressure and anthropogenic impacts on the environment.
  • Protection and recovery of the marine and estuary environment
  • Natural resource management, by means of exploitation models. Surveys for the establishment of marine reserves. Studies of marine endangered species.

  • Environmental monitoring nets: Monitoring and environmental quality control of coastal and estuarine waters. The most advanced specialised technical means in marine research (CTDs, current meters, tide and wave gauges, multibeam, etc.) are used.
  • Environmental impact surveys (EIAs): for coastal civil engineering works. Aggregate extraction and beach regeneration. Sea dumping control of petrochemical industries, thermal effluents of power plants, and desalination and water treatment plants, by means of in-house designed simulation tools (TRIMODENA©).
  • Business plans and town and country planning: Advice to the public administrations on the setting up of integral business plans for coastal activities, such as dredging and aquaculture planning, by means of in-house designed software (DRAGAGEST ©).
