Josu Santiago, in charge of the area for tuna fish research at AZTI-Tecnalia, will be the next president of the Scientific Committee of the International Commission for the Conservation of the Atlantic tuna (ICCAT). From 2011 he will take over from the North American scientist, G. P. Scott, who has carried out this task over the past five years.

ICCAT is an inter-government organisation responsible for the conservation of tuna and similar species in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean. Currently 48 contracting countries make up the ICCAT, almost all those with fishing interests in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.

Its scientific committee is responsible for developing and recommending procedures for gathering, analysing and publishing statistics on the fishing activities carried out in the agreement zone, as well as biological information about the stocks under their responsibility. It coordinates research activities within national and international programmes, carries out evaluations of stocks and advises the Commission on the need for specific measures of conservation and managing fishery resources.
