Following the passing and fleshing out of the Law on Food Safety, AZTI-Tecnalia, the expert technology centre in food research has put forward a series of technological solutions that respond to the needs of its clients to improve the quality and food safety of its products.

In this respect, AZTI-Tecnalia is developing life prediction software; by means of conservation techniques, they allow costs arising out of economic losses to be reduced, and the quality and food safety (seguridad alimentaria) of perishable products to be guaranteed.

Furthermore, the technology centre is working on the validation of intelligent labels (RFIDs, time-temperature indicators, freshness indicators, etc.) that reinforce the traceability and monitoring of cold chains in real time of perishable products and fresh foods throughout the distribution chain (factory-transport-warehouse-distributor-wholesaler). This way companies can increase their competitiveness, improve their logistics management and reinforce the trust their consumers have in food consumption.

At the same time, AZTI-Tecnalia are leaders in offering a comprehensive service for designing and developing new differentiating products; these products are more healthful, they contribute towards well-being and improvement in health, and get added value. With this aim in mind, a multidisciplinary team of specialists in which there is a powerful scientific marketing group is working with clients on:

  • the reformulation of foods with enhanced nutritional properties;
  • the assessment of the impact of processing and conservation on the stability of new foods;
  • the application for patents; or
  • advice when requesting nutritional and/or health claims.
