AZTI-Tecnalia presented some of the actions designed to prevent the main occupational risks; these actions were developed by its marine and food research units during the 8th International Conference on Occupational Risk Prevention (ORP 2010) held in Valencia on 5, 6 and 7 May.

The Technology Centre, which submitted two oral papers and two posters within the framework of the Itsaspreben and Nekapreben plans for the sector, presented the technological innovations developed in the fishing sector as well as actions for dissemination purposes; the latter case was through the presentation of the web portals www.itsaspreben.com and www.nekapreben.com.

Various aspects come together in occupational risk prevention: ethical and legal, administrative and labour, scientific, technical and practical aspects, but human aspects, more than anything. Faced with this, working in excellent workplace conditions is a critical link in obtaining quality products and services in companies; thus advancing decisively and safely along the road of competitiveness and progress.

That is why the Sectoral Plans for Occupational Risk Prevention in the Fisheries and Agroforestry Sectors of the Basque Autonomous Community (Itsaspreben and Nekapreben, respectively) set out to promote in both sectors the improvement in working conditions as well as the elimination of accidents, whether or not they cause personal injuries, and occupational diseases. To achieve this, they are aiming to apply working systems that internalise the principle of prevention in the fishery and agroforestry sectors.
These sectoral plans constitute a joint strategy between the Department for the Environment, Spatial Planning, Agriculture and Fisheries of the Basque Autonomous Community Government, the Office for Ports and Maritime Affairs, and OSALAN (the Workplace Health and Safety Executive of the Basque Autonomous Community).
