3 November 2011. Derio (Bizkaia, Basque Country). AZTI-Tecnalia's three headquarters have today been recognised as "Grade 2 Cardiac First Aid Areas", which means that this expert centre in marine and foodstuff research is the first R+D Centre in Spain to be designated thus.

The recognition granted by the ZonasCardio Foundation took place in a ceremony in which the foundation's chairman, Javier Muñoyerro, presented a certificate to AZTI-Tecnalia's Chief Officer Rogelio Pozo. It is part of the Cardiac Protection Scheme 2010-2012 which many public and private organisations from a whole range of fields (institutional, business, education and health) have signed up to. This initiative is being supported by important scientific associations, like the Spanish Association for Intensive and Critical Care and Coronary Units (SEMICYUC), the National Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Scheme, and the Spanish Association of Intensive Care Nursing and Coronary Units (SEEIUC).

For this project, the AZTI-Tecnalia R+D centre has equipped its headquarters in Sukarrieta and Derio (Bizkaia), and in Pasaia (Gipuzkoa) with a number of semi-automatic defibrillators, and has trained members of its staff in cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques and in the handling of these devices, so that they are in a position to take efficient action in the event of a possible cardiac arrest.

Risk prevention, focus on clients and CPR.

The low frequency of accidents linked also to the low levels of seriousness and accident rate -reflected by the almost nil existence of accidents affecting health- are very positive aspects, bearing in mind the high rates involved in many of the activities that AZTI-Tecnalia staff carry out, like going out to sea or diving work.
The merit of this result is largely due to the preventive action that the organisation carries out every year and which aims to consolidate a true culture of Prevention and Safety among its members of staff. Featuring likewise are the existence of a self-protection service, the availability of a senior technical officer responsible for prevention in each work hub, the unyielding commitment of AZTI-Tecnalia's management in the specifying of a clear hazard prevention policy, and the implementation of programmes.

Clients and visitors (ranging from tasters to researchers from other institutions in the numerous international meetings taking place throughout the year, plus visits by schoolchildren) who come to any of this R+D centre's three headquarters will also be more protected now.

At the end of the day it is about reinforcing AZTI-Tecnalia's line of action in Corporate Social Responsibility.
