AZTI-Tecnalia has signed a collaboration agreement with La Bacaladera, the fish product processing and marketing company, to handle, among other things, the design and development of new frozen fish products and the generation of added value in the marketing of Basque fish products. The agreement also covers the setting up of a fish farm for breeding cod, and the development of a model for improving production in cod fishing and processing in Greenland.

To set up a project for the design and development of new frozen fish products with added value, AZTI-Tecnalia will be applying advanced preservation technologies, in order to obtain new, long-life products using species like Panga, Dab, or Nile Perch. Other species of commercial interest like Salmon and Coley (Saithe or Coalfish) will also be studied experimentally. Further aims of this project are to devise a standard quality control method for the raw material, and to develop restructured and glazed fish products.

AZTI-Tecnalia will undertake to evaluate two locations in Greenland, in the towns of Qassimiut and Narsarmijit. These locations will be used as a base for gathering information on the current and future capacity of fishing in this area and on the processing of the fish into marketable products. The agreement concludes with a scheme to develop and market products of high added value from the species caught by the Basque fishing guilds.
